Reykjavik is a city always on the rise, combining a unique, laid-back vibe with a love of partying and a very sharp sense of style – which shines through in its trendy, design-forward hotels. From quirky boutiques to Insta-worthy stays, here are my favorite spots in town…
1. Eyja Guldsmeden Hotel
This is a romantic boutique gem! I really loved how it combined Nordic minimalism with Balinese-inspired touches, creating a cosy and stylish atmosphere. The reclaimed wood, eco-friendly accents, and retro-modern furniture give the hotel a warm, ‘hygge’ feel.
My standard double room, though compact, featured a beautiful four-poster bed, wooden floors, and the hotel’s signature organic toiletries, with stunning views of Esja mountain as a bonus.
The onsite restaurant served up delicious organic dishes, including plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, and was a welcoming bar, modern fitness centre, and bike rentals. I thought the location is fantastic – just a block from Laugavegur, from the city’s main shopping street, surrounded by trendy shops, cafes, and local attractions.
My favorite highlights…
- I loved all the thoughtful touches, like complimentary coffee and a selection of herbal teas available in the lobby all day – with various plant-based milk options, too. It felt welcoming and inclusive, adding a nice extra comfort to my stay!

I was really wowed by this sleek, modern design hotel! I loved how it combined sophisticated minimalism with warm Nordic influences with clean lines, warm wood accents, and tasteful colour palette of deep reds and browns, all framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that had dreamy views of the coast and mountains.
My room, a standard King, featured retro-modern furniture, hardwood floors, and atmospheric harbour views. It felt more like a destination in itself, with Tides restaurant led by Iceland’s first Michelin-star Chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason serving up a modern take on Icelandic cuisine.
The spa had Icelandic-inspired treatments and there was also a modern fitness centre, a chic rooftop and a lobby bar which served awesome cocktails. I also really loved its location near the old harbour and vibrant Laugavegur Street – it made an ideal base for exploring the city.
My personal highlights…
- I loved unwinding in true Icelandic style in their mineral-rich geothermal plunge pool – it felt invigorating and deeply relaxing at the same time!

3. CenterHotel Thingholt
I really enjoyed staying at this chic and sophisticated urban retreat, I loved the unique ambiance with its cocoon-like vibe, featuring dark, rich tones and local artwork.
My Deluxe Double room was elegantly furnished, boasting a spacious bed, sleek monochrome decor, and sophisticated amenities.
The hotel included a tranquil spa, sauna, steam room, a cozy bar, and a modern fitness centre. I started my day with a complimentary Icelandic-style breakfast. I also loved that the hotel is just steps away from lively bars, chic restaurants, and buzzy nightlife!
My highlights…
- I loved how helpful the staff were with guests trying to spot the Northern Lights, I was offered a wake-up call when the lights were visible and they sounded a bell in there too!

I really admired how this place combined a gorgeous classic Scandi-design with modern comforts. Its interiors were decorated with an impressive mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings, creating a really welcoming atmosphere!
My rooms was designed for relaxation and featured a comfortable bed, elegant decor, and state-of-the-art amenities. The hotel’s central location was perfect for exploring the city and was close to interesting shopping districts, cultural landmarks, and fun nightlife.
I also found a variety of dining options onsite with attentive staff, including a rooftop bar with panoramic city views and a cosy cafe that served up fine local and international cuisine.
My highlights…
- Dining in their romantic onsite Bon Restaurant, the chunky Truffle Fries and their sweet (but not too sweet!) Apple Tarte Tatin dessert were just divine!
5. Grandi by Center Hotels
I thought this was such a gorgeous eclectic spot! I was totally charmed by its industrial-chic design and playful, Icelandic-inspired accents.
My room was spacious and artfully decorated with colourful, retro-modern furniture and a comfortable, large double bed. It featured all the essentials, including crisp white linens and a well-appointed private bathroom with a luxurious soaking bath.
I also found a modern spa with communal hot tubs and a sauna, alongside cosy spaces designed for relaxation. There was also a welcoming bar and a stylish restaurant that offered a variety of Icelandic dishes. Set in the Grandi Harbor District, its location was excellent, near scenic waterfront views, trendy restaurants, and local art galleries.
My favourite highlights…
- Going for a relaxing anti-aging facial in their atmospheric onsite spa which was adorned with cozy fireplaces – I loved the innovative peel-off biphasic mask (which left my skin feeling very soft!) which was part of the treatment.
6. Center Hotels Laugavegur
This is a stylish centrally located retreat! I loved its sleek, Scandinavian-inspired design and I was loved how it exuded a warm and welcoming vibe, featuring cozy fireplaces, clean lines, soft lighting, and earthy tones. My deluxe room was a delight with its trendy monochrome design, floor-to-ceiling windows, and private balcony offering stunning city views.
The lounge bar was a fab spot for Icelandic-inspired cocktails, and it offered several dining options, including Lóa Restaurant, which presents a mix of Icelandic and international cuisine.
The location is superb, on the main shopping and dining street, close to vibrant cafes, boutiques, and nightlife, and just a short walk from Harpa Concert Hall and Hallgrímskirkja Church.

- I loved how helpful the staff were! One morning, I had to leave early for a tour, and they thoughtfully packed a breakfast for me to take on the go – it was such a nice, personal touch!

7. Reykjavik Marina Hotel
I really liked this quirky medium-sized hotel! It was a uniquely charming hotel with a playful, nautical-inspired design that reflects its harbourside location. The interior blended industrial chic with vibrant colours, modern art, and maritime elements such as ship ropes and boat-themed furniture, creating a lively and stylish atmosphere.
My room featured a trendy design with playful prints, retro-modern furniture, hardwood floors, and breathtaking harbour views from a private balcony.
The hotel’s social hubs included a hip café, bar, and a trendy industrial-style restaurant, all designed with cosy seating, quirky design features, and roaring log fires, overlooking the sea and mountains. Perfectly situated in the Old Harbour, I found the hotel was within walking distance of Reykjavik’s top cafes, cultural hotspots, and popular attractions.
My highlights…
- I loved how my shower was naturally heated by natural geothermal energy! The water felt smooth, almost velvety with a faint mineral scent which reminded me of natural hot springs!

8. Oddsson Hotel
As well as being trendy, this was a fun and playful mid-range spot! I thought it really stood out with its youthful and creative vibe and colourful retro-modern designs and quirky decorative details.
My superior double room was a peaceful retreat with funky retro-inspired decor, wooden parquet floors, soundproofing for a restful sleep, and a sleek, modern bathroom with a glass-encased rain shower.
While I found there was no onsite restaurant, it served up a delicious warm buffet breakfast and organised bike tours to explore the city. Its awesome location near the city’s waterfront ensured I was easy reach of lively bars, restaurants, and cultural attractions.
My personal highlights…
- I absolutely loved the “Make Your Own Waffle” station at breakfast! The fluffy Belgian-style waffles were perfect for piling on all kinds of tasty toppings. My favourites were the homemade lingonberry jam and the Icelandic caramel syrup – both are local specialties and added an amazing flavour twist!

9. 101 Hotel
This was once awarded the title of ‘Leading Boutique Hotel in the World’! I have to be honest I was totally won over by its upscale, artfully cool ambiance and chic, minimalist design which featured a monochrome palette, polished black leather seating, oversized glass windows, and custom Icelandic artwork.
My hypoallergenic guest room was exquisitely appointed with a silver-clawed freestanding bath, blanched-oak floors, plush bathrobes, organic Aveda toiletries, and underfloor heating. The room also had handy soundproofing, a patio with sea views, and BOSE Bluetooth speakers.
More amenities included an on-site art gallery, a modern gym, a trendy restaurant, and a cosy bar. The spa was a relaxing haven with a hot tub, Swedish-style sauna, and steam room. I also really liked its downtown Reykjavik, next to trendy restaurants, nightclubs, and art galleries.

My personal highlights…
- Brunching on local specialties at their stylish Kastrup restaurant was a treat! I finally got to try pickled herrings – with a twist. They were curried here, which added an unexpected and delicious kick to the classic dish!

10. Exeter Hotel by Keahotels
I thought was a really unique urban retreat! It had a stylish industrial-chic design with Icelandic elements such as exposed grey concrete, reclaimed wood accents, and large factory-style windows.
My Urban Double room was elegantly appointed with dark hardwood floors, retro-modern furniture, views of the inner courtyard, and thoughtfully selected modern art. There was an array of cool dining and relaxation options, including a stylish restaurant which served up tasty Icelandic-inspired dishes, an intimate bar where I enjoyed hand-mixed cocktails and locally crafted beer, and a trendy bakery that served up freshly made pastries and coffee.
I also really enjoyed the bike rentals, the onsite sauna, and well-equipped modern gym. Located in the vibrant Grandi Harbour District, the hotel was just steps from the Old Harbour and put me within walking distance of the famous Harpa Concert Hall and downtown’s bustling shopping and dining scene.

- The divine house-made sourdough bread from their adorable onsite bakery which was freshly baked to perfection! It was served warm with a sprinkle of sea salt, fresh herbs, and a side of tangy pickled vegetables – a treat I kept going back for!

- The thoughtful touches – I loved how I was greeted with a glass of champagne at reception and then taken to my suite by the friendly staff. I also really appreciated the long, extending telescope and how my bathtub faced the windows so I could gaze at the gorgeous views – it made it an extra-special experience!

12. Canopy by Hilton City Centre
This is a a funky gem of a place! I found the atmosphere sociable and immersive, embodying a true lifestyle hotel vibe. The design was striking – contemporary and urban with Scandi-chic and retro flair. Warm wood, local artwork, and colourful accents created a stylish, welcoming ambiance.

- Feeling like a local in the stylish bar while sipping on very strong Icelandic Mule (which the barman told me was made with brennivín – Icelandic vodka!) and eating freshly baked rye bread garnished with sea salt!
13. Kvosin Downtown Hotel
Tradition meets culture in this gorgeous boutique! I love how it blended tradition with contemporary flair. Its design featured warm wood accents, soft lighting, and retro patterns, which created a homely yet stylish atmosphere.
My ‘Big Room’ was a spacious delight with parquet floors, an oversized double bed, trendy furniture, and an industrial-chic bathroom. It also included a convenient kitchenette with modern appliances.
The hotel’s wine bar was a romantic setting for an evening drink, and the continental breakfast featured local, freshly sourced ingredients. Situated near awesome attractions like the Parliament and Harpa Concert Hall, it was an ideal spot for exploring the best cultural and historical landmarks.
My favourite highlights…
- Their award-winning concierge team – as well as being incredibly welcoming they also helped me book discounted tours to the Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle and gave me local restaurant recommendations (one was for Apotek Restaurant which turned out to bc an awesome suggestion)!
14. OK Hotel
In my opinion, the OK Hotel is much more than just OK! This quirky, budget-friendly option featured eco-friendly, self-catering apartments with eclectic decor. Vintage furniture, vibrant colours, exposed brick, urban art, and antique finds created a fun and stylish atmosphere!
My mini-apartment was a visual treat with a mix of vintage furniture, recycled materials, and local art, complemented by a mini-kitchen, flat-screen TV, and Bluetooth speakers.
Located on Laugavegur, Reykjavik’s vibrant social hub, I loved that it had excellent amenities, including delicious Korean cuisine at the K-bar, awesome BBQ facilities, bike rentals, and a friendly concierge service who helped me arrange tours!

- I loved the playful attention to detail this place had – I even found an old acoustic guitar tucked away in the corner of my apartment!
15. Kex Hostel
This place is a beloved city institution! I thought it was genius blend of a hostel’s affordability with the chic of a boutique hotel – buzzy, fun, and incredibly sociable! The boho-retro decor featured vintage finds, exposed concrete, second-hand books, and reclaimed wood.
My compact guest room had shared bathroom facilities but boasted stylish hipster-friendly decor with vintage furnishings, interesting art, and even board games for a quirky touch.
I discovered a heated outdoor patio, a vintage-style barbershop, an old-school gym, and a cosy café serving home-baked biscuits. The communal kitchen and regular events like music, comedy, and open-mic nights added to the awesome atmosphere and I was totally won over!
