5 European Cities to Explore this Winter

As the cooler weather starts to make an experience, many travelers will be thinking about escaping for a winter break. Although visiting Europe won’t give you a sun injection, there are plenty of places that are stunning in the cold months.

Here are 5 European cities you should be considering for your next trip – you may even want to combine them into an epic Europe tour

Vienna, Austria: A wonderland of culture and festivity

Vienna is a popular destination all year round, but it truly feels magical at Christmastime. Architecturally, this city is a feast for the eyes with beautiful examples of Industrial Vienna as well as more modern structures.

One of the most famous attractions in the city is the opera houses. With performances being offered year-round, you will be spoiled for choice.

Throughout December, classical music lovers will be dazzled by the sheer array of offerings. A truly Viennese experience is to attend a concert in one of the stunning churches dotted around the city, the most impressive of which is Stephansdom Cathedral.

Prague, Czechia: A fairytale city under snow

It is easy to see why Prague has got a reputation for being a fairytale city. With looming towers, delicious food and incredible bridges, it is easy to get swept away in the magic of it all.

Prague has some of the best Christmas markets in Europe, making them the perfect place to do your festive gift buying. Why not top the day off with ice skating at the Čapadlo ice rink? Located on the waterfront, this venue offers free skating and awe-inspiring views of Prague Castle and the Vltava.

Budapest, Hungary: Thermal baths and holiday spirit

The festive period can be a cold one, so head to Budapest if you want to warm up in a thermal bath. The capital of Hungary is situated on a fault line, resulting in 123 natural springs which are used to heat the famous baths.

For the best experience, head to Szechenyi Baths on a weekday as it tends to be less crowded. There is nothing like enjoying the warm baths whilst snow is falling all around you; a truly magical experience.

Stockholm, Sweden: A Scandi gem

Winters in Sweden are long and dark with very few hours of daylight, so visitors should try to make the most of it. If the weather is clear, head to The Royal Palace and Parliament House. These beautiful buildings look especially interesting in the winter lighting.

If you are lucky enough to visit on December 13th, you will be treated to the St Lucia’s Day celebrations. Tracing back to 304AD, this celebration is full of processions, concerts, and incredibly tasty saffron buns.

Copenhagen, Denmark: Hygge and holiday cheer

The Danish term ‘hygge’ is defined as a cozy and comfy feeling, and that is how you will feel exploring Copenhagen.

For the ultimate Danish festive experience you must head to the world-famous Tivoli Gardens.

The whole family will be able to enjoy various amusement rides, meet Santa, and take in the twinkling Christmas lights. There are also around 60 stalls each year, filled to the brim with Christmas decorations, festive snacks, and warm drinks. It truly is an unmissable experience.

No matter which European city you choose to visit this winter, you’re sure to be enchanted by the cozy, festive atmosphere.

From the twinkling Christmas markets of Vienna to the steaming thermal baths of Budapest, these destinations offer a perfect escape from the chill. So bundle up, pack your bags, and get ready to experience the magic of Europe in the wintertime. Where will your winter wanderlust take you?
